Here is an excerpt from her website
“As Executive Director of Volusia Tax Reform, our organization has been showing our elected officials how to get the job done for the past four years. Four years ago we told the County Council that real estate was the cornerstone of our economy. We told them that if they did not do the right thing and reduce the tax burden then our economy would go into a downward spiral.
Of course it does not take a financial genius to figure out that this financial crisis did not start in Volusia County. It is well established that it was triggered by a liquidity shortfall in the United States banking system caused by the overvaluation of assets – one of the many side effect was the collapse of a global housing bubble.
While we all wish we could pay less property taxes, they certainly have not caused our economy to go into a downward spiral.

if you think taxing property with a 100 % increase in five years and no population growth helped the situation you should be the poster child for idiots …..people like you are the reason we have the problems we now have and your just clueless….but you were probably protected by a1…..how’s that working out for ya now? I think we should clone Margie and fill every seat on the council . Dennis
First, thank you for being the first to comment on this blog.
People like me investigate and base their opinions on factual information instead of listening to the rethoric of some candidates willing to say anything to get elected.
I’m not sure where you heard the “100% tax increase in five years” but here are the facts.
From 2001 to 2010 (Year 2010 based on projected tax rate) County taxes will have gone up by 48.5%. During the same 9 years the county growth rate was aproximatly 26%.
The county tax rate went down by 1.5% last year and should go down by 14.4% for 2010.

Ok..you want proof ? I currently own 21 properties in Volusia county and my taxes went up between 130 and almost 700 percent from 2001 and 2006. look me up on vcpa website waters, Dennis. This was typical for anyone without soh. and believe me, every one ‘s would have gone up without soh. so please don’t insult me by saying I am only listening to RHETORIC
. .. also your growth numbers are flawed when you only count full time residents. Best, Dennis
Do you understand that when the assessed value of a property goes up so does the amount of property taxes? I checked one of your properties – At the time you acquired it in 1999 it was valued at $11.160 and you paid $251.87 in property taxes. In 2009 (10 years later) the property in accessed at $125,780 and you paid $2,756.86 in add-valorem taxes. The value of your property went up by $114.620 and that is why you are paying more taxes and certainly not because the property taxes rate went up by “130% to 700%”
If you have a problem with your property value assessment you can complain to your (Republican) Property Appraiser (Morgan Gilreath) but don’t blame the county council. Assuming she is elected ,Margie Patchett will have absolutely no control over property value accessments.
